Modern automobiles offer a wide and growing functional range realized by an increasing number of electric/electronic components, namely sensors, actuators and electronic control units (ECU). Especially in the domain of driver assistance and active safety systems numerous innovations (e.g. ABS, ESP, ACC and LDW) were introduced to meet the strict requirements for an enhanced safety level for vehicle drivers and passengers. An overview and a classification of current and forthcoming developments of different driver assistance systems is given. The functionality of various sensor types used for the perception of the vehicle surround will be pointed out and their potential in terms of object detection capability is discussed. An experimental model vehicle (scale 1:5) is presented that has been developed as an experimentation and demonstration platform for possible future assistance systems. Several vehiclespecific sensors are attached to the experimental platform forming a multisensor network for the detection of objects (e.g. vehicles, pedestrian) and infrastructure characteristics (e.g. driving lane characteristics) in the surrounding field of the ego-vehicle. Initial results of sensor measurements are given and discussed.
