Body shells of cars, busses, airplanes are permanently exposed to external mechanical loads or impacts by flint or hail. These exposures mostly result in local plastic damages on body shell panels. As determined in numerous research series, the denting resistance can be enhanced by higher plastic strains in sheet metal parts. Stretching of specimens prior to the deep drawing process increases the plastic strain in relatively flat metal sheet body shells. New requirements for stretch forming methods, defined by experimental data and present knowledge led to developing a new stretch forming technology. The basic function principle includes multiple bead geometries, which induce tensile forces by forming a flat sheet metal blank. The application of this stretch forming principle allows a renouncement on complex hydraulic and control systems and furthermore the realization of cost optimized stretch forming tools. Especially the simple geometry design and tool setup allows low investment costs and short process cycle times. Within fundamental research series, the new technology was examined and new estimation methods based on experimental data and FEM-Simulations were defined at the Institute for Metal Forming Technology at Stuttgart University.
