Hyundai Motor Co. has been striving to develop the power electronics technology in automotive applications, with aiming at fuel saving and safety enhancement of vehicles. The power electronics of Hyundai are mainly focused on three sections; high-performance/high-efficiency electric machine, power semiconductor and control software. In these technologies of three sections, a common platform concept is developed for both the cost effective solutions of car electronics and preparation of hybrids and future fuel cell vehicle. The development activities of power electronics technologies of Hyundai are reviewed and a synergic relationship with diverse partners in core competence is introduced. In this paper, the key power electronic component and the technologies applied to hybrid vehicles would be shortly described. And Hyundai's continuous efforts for successful penetration of power electronics technology into automotive applications, especially hybrids, are introduced, as well. As a solution for overcoming the barrier of commercialisation of hybrids, a synergic relationship with diverse partners in core competence through cooperation with various kind of organizations surrounding Hyundai is briefly presented.
