Both engine experiments and numerical simulations with a detailed surface kinetic model were conducted in order to clarify catalytic reactivity under oxygen rich conditions, and to improve the catalytic reactivity of diesel oxidation catalysts under low temperature conditions. In a wide range of experimental conditions, the simulation results were in good agreement with the experiments. As a result, the simulations showed that occupation of catalyst active sites due to O2 adsorption was responsible for catalyst deactivation in hydrocarbon oxidation under oxygen rich conditions. The adsorption energy of gas phase reactants (CO, C2H4, HCHO, CH4, etc.) on the precious metals governed catalytic reactivity under oxygen rich conditions.
