In recent years, compatibility performance during Car-to-Car impacts has been widely discussed among many researchers in research organizations and automobile manufacturers. Studies performed under the International Harmonized Research Activities (IHRA) have reported that the following items are important in solving compatibility issues during a frontal impact: (1)Good structural interaction, (2) Frontal stiffness matching, (3) Occupant compartment strength, (4) Control of the deceleration time histories of bullet vehicles. The test procedure and evaluation indices currently proposed in these studies are primarily aimed at improving compatibility during a side or rear impact. The current research focused on the effect of stiffness of the front-end structure of the bullet vehicle on the protection of the target vehicle during a Car-to-Car side impact. In the present study, two crash tests were conducted to examine the differences between MDB-to-Car and Car-to-Car side impacts (MDB = Moving Deformable Barrier). A study using FE and multi-body simulations was performed to clarify the parameter of bullet vehicle structures that contribute to compatibility performance in Car-to-Car side Impacts. The results showed that the matching of geometry and stiffness in vehicle structure contributes significantly to compatibility performance in side impacts.
