Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Machines have been used in hybrid electric vehicles in various applications. Due to manufacturing constraints they have always been limited in the power and torque output possible despite the fact that the potential power density is superior to most other machines. This paper describes two new machines that have been developed for high traction and generation applications. Power densities higher than 1.4 kW/kg have been achieved for a maximum output of 200 kW. Depending on the application the machines have been optimized for traction or generation. Integrated liquid cooling allows for a very compact design with high efficiency. This paper describes the design and manufacturing process for these machines and explores the possibilities for further application. The machines are compared to conventional types to show why their more complex design is justified.
