China's production of crude steel almost doubles between 2003 and 2006, adding almost 200 million tons in just three years. During the same time, the rest of the world added more than 70 million tons. This rapid expansion over a short period put tremendous pressure on all links in the raw materials supply chain: mines, railways, ports and shipping, leading spectacular price rises in the cost of raw materials for steelmaking. This paper will attempt to assess what the future holds for raw materials markets.
