Nowadays, the majority of chemical tankers are built with duplex stainless steels, replacing austenitic grades. This evolution has been possible with the study of stainless steels corrosion resistance in labs. Considering the cargoes, the risk of corrosion is due to the chemical products transported but more particularly, to the presence of seawater which may be accidental (seawater ingress) or not (used of seawater for pre-washing). So, lab study was realised to evaluate the localised corrosion resistance of both austenitic and duplex stainless steel grades in chlorides containing solution. It appears clearly that the grade UNS S31803 is a good candidate to built tanks. No pits are observed for this duplex grade during electrochemical tests whereas low values of pitting potential have been measured on 316L. For crevice corrosion, some initiation can be observed for UNS S31803 but the highly attack is observed on 316L. The detailed inspections of the Tour Pomerol (Navale Francaise) after eight years of service confirm the better corrosion resistance of UNS S31803. The paper describes the findings, showing that although operating conditions have been rather severe (as demonstrated by corrosion of 316L parts), the duplex tanks have performed extremely well. So, by combining better corrosion resistance and higher mechanical properties the duplex grade UNS S31803 appears to be a more cost effective material than 316L austenitic grade in chemical tankers.
