In this paper a short overview on Ducati engine design methodologies has been described. Essential to get optimum results in designing and producing components is a close collaboration, under rational organization, among every part of whole technical department. Specific design methodologies depend obviously on component type on certain components design process is more solid and standardized, strong tradition helps in those cases, on other components work flow is more in development and typically it's the case of items being in strong evolution because of general engine performances trend and standards increase. Close interaction among design and simulation phases is fundamental: because of the complexity of the problems, of limited time, some virtual simulation processes are more approximated than others, but approximation often is quite satisfactory for the purposes and even it contributes to a degree of flexibility of the work flow which gives high benefits. The general goal is to exploit virtual prototyping tools to limit design-testing iterations, as this leads to cost reduction and to time savings, but the goal doesn't implies to reduce testing capabilities, rather to increase them having the possibility to improve test effectiveness spending less hours and efforts for a massive quantity of poor quality result job. Only under these conditions testing phase can produce important responses and not simply a 'yes or not' result, helping to understand and control phenomena.
