This paper involves an introduction of an approach to reduce power- train noise where the Design of Experiments (DOE) has been implemented. Decoupling tests have been conducted on a test car to identify the engine noise transmission paths into the cabin. Under each coupling/decoupling combination, sound pressure levels at ear locations have been measured and evaluated in the second gear slow acceleration. Statistical calculations have been conducted to determine major noise transmission paths and refinement strategies. The experimentation and further development work result in a substantial reduction of power-train noise, as well as a reduction in pre-production power-train mounting development time.
