In this paper a formal, model-based architecture evaluation approach is applied for the design of an automatic train operation platform to improve safety in regional railways along the lines of the German 'Zugleitbetrieb' (ZLB) system, a simplified traffic management system on secondary lines. A formal modelling of architectural goals and architecture exploration improves the documentation and traceability of architectural design decisions. Besides a formalised integration of quality requirements into the system architecture design, reusability and an evolution of architectural designs and derived design models for hardware and software also become feasible because design decisions and the underlying constraints are made explicit. Actually, this is one possibility to document architectural knowledge.
