The paper deals with problems of quantitative appraisal of safety-related systems. The authors present their experience based on long-term theoretical and practical work with safety-related systems, mostly in railway domain. Special attention is paid to attributes influencing system safety. In more details redundancy degree applied in the system is discussed together with the role of fault detection and negation mechanisms and ability of the system to be recovered after fault occurrence. Development of models for Markov analysis is discussed, emphasizing necessity of modelling in the process of proving safety properties of safety-related systems.
