As the growth in air and rail traffic accelerates, passengers are demanding better quality of service, fewer delays and ever decreasing prices, but they also require a guaranteed level of safety. Therefore, the importance of relationship of transportation related safety critical systems is considerable. The paper deals with two modes of public transportation and puts the following question: how is it possible the technology transfer between rail and air transportation in the field of safety. Air transportation established international recommendations and practices, that for every single participant of the transportation process shall be clearly specified, but can be found some area, in which rationalization seems to be unavoidable, same as in rail transportation, just the point of view is different. Cooperation between rail and air transportation and information exchange are essential elements for the effective and successful development of any aviation and railway safety-related activity, in pursuit of the common goal to improve and/or maintain aviation and railway safety. Concerning safety related aspects, the two modes of transportation are intercorrected along the following two points of view: automation of ground operations in air transportation, and the certification standards of railway vehicles. As a result, the paper contains a preliminary evaluation contributing to the reduction of gaps in these systems, furthermore enables the exploration of new applications.
