Due to demands for resource protection, comfort increase and safety enhancement, lightweight design has become a key aspect of automotive body engineering. Therefore both is required, a significant reduction of total weight as well as an increase of load capacity of structural components. The patchwork technique fulfils these requirements by realizing a load adapted component design. The basic principle of the patchwork technology is the application of a base sheet with reduced thickness in order to decrease the total component weight. In high loaded regions, a smaller reinforcement patch sheet is adapted. Base sheet and patch are joined in the flat condition. The joined patchwork structure will be formed afterwards. The specific load capacity is adjustable by the variation of material or thickness combination. Booth sheets, made of advanced high strength steels, can be favorably joined by laser remote welding. The load adapted patch geometry and specific seam contours lead to an optimized forming behavior of the whole patchwork structure. A local inductive treatment partially enhances the formability furthermore. A forming-optimized patchwork design was developed by hydro-forming tests on model samples. The production and testing of two demonstrators proves the practicability.
