A new ferrite-pearlite wheel steel with C and Si as main strengthening elements was developed aiming at the damage characteristics of heavy duty wagon wheel. With rational C and Si contents, the steel has high strength, relatively high toughness and reasonable phase transformation characteristics. On-line loading test showed that the new steel has a better balance between anti-mechanical and anti-thermal damage properties and is more suitable for heavy duty transportation than conventional wheel steel.
