In order to fulfil the requirement of EU-directive 2005/32/EC Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) should be provided. EPDs describe the cumulative environment impacts resulting from all stages in the product life cycle. These EPDs base on the methodology of life cycle assessment (LCA) according to ISO 14040 ff. The LCA approach consists of four components: 1. Goal definition and scoping; 2. Life cycle inventory analysis (LCI); 3. Life cycle impact assessment (LCIA), 4. Interpretation. In order to apply this methodology for the generation of EPD different software tools can be used. The paper presents findings from the comparison of different software tools. The results calculated with different software tools for one motor type vary in a wide range up to 95% for selected impact categories. None of the models compared is exceptionally good or bad concerning the usefulness for creating an EPD but the results gathered cannot be compared by users. The main differences between the software tools are : - the considered phases of the life cycle, - the selected materials and other assumptions (e.g. recycling quotas), - load models and lifespan, selected impact categories and methods of impact assessment. This analysis shows that the system boundary (regarding total consumption or only losses) must be defined so that the environmental product declaration of different manufacturers can be compared. The impact category GWP can be seen as the leading category for future EPDs. This category is on the one hand mainly influenced by the use phase and on the other hand it shows great conformability in the evaluated software tools. Most of the data for inventory analyses and life cycle assessment are gathered from libraries. The use of libraries and other databases has to be up to date. For instance the increasing portion of renewable energy in power supply will reduce the GWP over the lifespan of motors.
