A method is presented that will provide an environment for the development of overall aircraft power management strategies and will therefore enable to analyze and optimize prospective system architectures on a global level. The presented method is based on the formalization of the systems preliminary design process and the implementation of all interactions between the systems and between the systems and the aircraft environment in terms of energy flow and mass from a functional point of view. All Concluding, the presented methodology has not as first aim to be just another high level evaluation or optimization method, but is to provide a tool that helps the engineer (system designer or overall power architect) to better understand the impact of a specific design or technology change on the aircraft & on other systems - a method that allows a fast analysis of different configurations in early design phases. The presented method combines an automated pre-sizing process based on a functional approach with a performance process. This allows to balance the power to be installed and the actual consumed power. The dependence of the energy flow on the time axis and the operation modes are part of the integrated approach in order to optimize the design of system architectures and of systems within the overall aircraft context. A modular approach with formalized interfaces in terms of energy exchange allows the fast analysis of different power architectures. Thus, more consistent solutions in terms of simplified architectures and better integration of system functionalities can be elaborated. An integrated method is proposed that helps to stay above the complexity and see the big lines of interdependencies, improving the transparency of system functions at a global level. This approach is going to be implemented in a simulation environment; important issues like the traceability of model accuracy and the propagation of uncertainties will be addressed.
