Ever shorter times to market and increasingly exacting requirements for chassis system functionality necessitate an efficient and intelligent development process. Careful advanced development ensures that parameters are integrated at an early stage and that conditions for subsequent development can be posited rapidly and reliably. In the early phase of development, a rapid analytic and synthesis program (ABE tool) is used for kinematic design. A virtual product environment is described that consolidates a host of individual axle development steps into a single process. The kinematics for new designs are defined using the ABE program. A subsequent step involves elastokinematic design via synchronization of CAD and multibody simulation applications, which allows for the modeling of numerous load scenarios. The results of these simulations are transferred to an FEM environment in which individual component loads are simulated in greater detail and recursive component topology modifications can be realized. In this case, optimized components are retrieved from an axle and component database with a view to reusing identical parts wherever possible. The VPE process has been extended by a kinematic and elastokinematic optimization function that enables accelerated and efficient axle configuration for target ride and comfort dynamics that also allow for the specified package.
