Siemens VDO has developed a broad portfolio of components for gasoline direct injection engines, involving piezo and magnetic injector valves, volume controlled high pressure pumps, dedicated integrated circuits and a comprehensive software which enables the operation of those components in a wide range of conditions over their life time. This paper gives an insight into the functional software for the operation and control of those components, the cylinder balancing functions and the fuel high pressure closed loop control. The current Siemens VDO hardware platform is based on the Infineon TriCore TC17xx processor family. The ECU embedded software is organized in functional aggregates where each one is dedicated to a specific task or common area of application. Every aggregate is divided into a core and a customer specific part. The injection realisation is outlined including the following topics: injector needle lift, final injection time, injection phasing, cylinder shut off, and diagnosis valve and power stage. A short overview is given about the minimal fuel mass adaptation, cylinder balancing and the fuel supply system with its set of diagnosis to fulfil LEV II and EU 5 requirements.
