This paper deals with analysis of an acoustic box supporting two speakers for car radio system. The box is made of talc-reinforced polypropylene, an injection-mouldable polymer. A computational model of the structure is implemented with the software ABAQUS 6.5 and two different analyses were performed: shock load analysis and random response analysis. The aim is to simulate the response of the structure to the test conditions defined by the standard provided by car manufacturers. Experimental tests are required by car manufacturer to assess conformity of the prototype to the regulations. Finite elements analysis is a valid support to the design of automotive components because it provides information on the mechanical behaviour of the structure without the building and testing of a physical model. Results for shock load analysis and random response analysis are provided. The importance of the model's discretisation is highlighted to obtain reliable results in terms of stress concentrations and eigenfrequencies. Simulation of the mechanical behaviour of the structure provides important results with regard to displacement and stress prior to the building of the prototype. This leads to a reduction of development time and cost. The research project has been developed with the partnership of a manufacturer of audio car systems based in Reggio Emilia.
