There are very few available methods that calculate fuselage weight in the preliminary design phase. Even less methods incorporate effects of different materials with such accuracy that it is possible to perform a material trade-off. Therefore a method has been developed for fuselage weight prediction in the preliminary design phase that evaluates the weight and weight saving due to the use of new materials. Moreover, the growth factor on the rest of the aircraft has been incorporated. Validation of the tool has been done by testing the method on a wide range of existing aluminum aircraft designs before applying it to a Glare structure. By offering accurate insight in the impact of new fuselage materials such as Glare on total aircraft weight, this extremely fast tool enables to perform a better material trade-off in the preliminary design phase without the need for detailed geometry needed for a FE analysis and therefore reduces design-cycle time.
