A direct system identification method for vehicle engine rigid body inertia properties based on in situ measurements is presented in this work. One of the advantages of this method is the use of acceleration response measurements obtained from standard NVH tests performed on a vehicle. Since there is no need to separate the engine, there will be a considerable reduction in time required for experimental setup and execution. In addition, an alternative identification formulation is presented for cases where engine mount dynamic rates are not available. The proposed method has been applied to a pickup truck and the identified and actual results are presented and compared.
