Transportation is the essential backbone of the mobility-based 21st century economy. To optimize its utility as an economic conduit, transportation must be utilized holistically as a safe, secure, smart, and sustainable movement system of people, goods, and information by air, land, sea and space. This requires a cross-modal integration involving physical modes of movement (e.g., aviation, roadways, maritime, rail, transit, astronautics) combined with electronic modes of movement (e.g., utilities, satellites, distance communication and information technologies). Impaired transportation, that does not optimize its potential, places the nation's population and economy at risk. It is a challenge that must be solved. The end solution will be effectively demonstrated only when the following occur: 1. Collaboration and cooperation between all institutional sectors: government, business and nonprofits at all levels. 2. A regional approach to any incident that potentially impedes the system of mobility that supports our economic-based society. 3. Mission integration that collectively addresses safety, security and sustainability as a whole thereby leaving no vacuum or gap.
