The main objectives of the automobile industry in recent years are to improve the passive safety and to reduce the CO2 emissions by reducing the total body weight of the car. Therefore high strength steels and advanced high strength steels are widely used in an increasing number of applications. In a significant quota these steels get joined using weld bonding technologies. The combination of the advantages of the very economical resistance spot welding with these of a structural adhesive bonding enables to transform the higher strength of the base material to better performances of the joint and by this to better performances of the car body structure. In the present study, the influences of the adhesives and the process control on the quality of the weld bonded joint are investigated using following adhesives: the one component hot curing adhesives Terostat 5194 (rubber based), Betamate 1480 (epoxy based) and SikaPower 498 (98-419, epoxy-polyurethane-based) and the two component cold curing adhesive Terokal 5047. To evaluate the quality of the weld bonded joints among others their performance is tested under quasi-static, impact and under cyclic load and various boundary conditions. The strength of the adhesives was tested under different shear rates. Furthermore spot welded joints are tested as a reference to the weld bonded joints. The current results point out that the ability of the adhesives to be combined with the spot welding process depends on their rheological properties and on the metal sheet combination that has to be joined. Therefore every chosen adhesive-metal sheet combination should be tested with regard to optimize the welding parameters and the strength ot the weld.
