In today's high competitive markets of manufacturing industry, especially automotive, product development is challenged by increasing complexity. New models are constantly issued, a big number of functional properties are added and the portion of electronic components heavily exceeds. Cost pressure, time to market acceleration and a highly noticed product quality need to be managed for a rising number of models and feature combinations. Essential parts of engineering work move from OEMs to major suppliers. Hierarchical supplier structures migrate to multi-directional partner networks. Market deliverables and competition force companies to change partners and customers more often. Thus it is necessary to support complex processes in multi-OEM and multi-partner environments with adequate IT-solutions and services. It is far too complex to manage all these deliverables with the IT-resources within a supplier company only. Configuration of CAx environments as well as data exchange with partners and customers are not value adding. Cross company shared services offer immense cost saving potentials. The presentation names areas for shared services and alternative IT concepts that are used for collaboration within both, the automotive and aerospace industry. It also addresses selected issues such as knowledge security and OEM/supplier management during product planning and engineering.
