A very wide spectrum of mathematical methods applied to model the driver is revealed in order to understand and improve automobile dynamics and to study human driving behaviour. Technical issues are predominant with respect to application and it may be noted that the human factor in the coupled system vehicle-driver receives not always adequate attention. In a way, the technical understanding of the automobile is still far beyond the representation of the human driver. Nevertheless, physiological and psychological considerations determine many driver models to a certain extent and much effort can be noticed in incorporating knowledge from human sciences to compensate for the mathematical theories and more technical understanding of driving. Although experimental validation lags somewhat behind the advanced mathematical methods, driver models became considerably important in vehicle system dynamics. The wide variety of mathematical methods applied to determine the behaviour of the driver may not only result from particular preferences of the individual research scientist but follow the wide variety of different areas of application. Conclusions from an application to a conclusive mathematical method may not be drawn, although some specific modelling approaches seem to be more effective with respect to the number of applications and publications than others, but the driver model for a certain kind of application is not apparent as it is the case for other models in vehicle system dynamics. And for good reason, driving is a complex physical and mental individual process and will keep scientists interested and inventive to simulate and understand human (driving) behaviour.
