The future of individual mobility is more and more driven by the fact that the energy resources are limited and environmental impact has to be considered. Hybridisation of the propulsion train is discussed as solution for these issues. Till now, and also in the near future, it is mainly the electric energy storage System, which still defines performance and costs of new concepts like Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV), Plug-in Hybrids (pHEV), and Electric Vehicles (EV). The required performance of the electrical energy storage system for HEVs is very specific: The system has to be small and light, needs to have high power density for charge and discharge and also the lifetime of the system upon operation in various drive cycles and temperature ranges is important. Lithium Ion (Lilon) chemistry shows a wide area of different material combinations. Optimized combination of power and energy density, temperature dependence and enhanced safety are possible. Due to high power capability and high energy content the safety aspects of the electric energy storage systems for HEV are very important. The Li-lon technology creates special needs for the safety concept, dependent on used materials and design of the cells. The start of volume production for the Li-lon technology in electrical Energy Storage Systems (ESS) for HEVs is expected to happen in the year 2008, with continuous increase of production volumes in the following years. The starting nickel-cobalt based chemistry already shows a very good power density. Newer developments rely on Co-Ni-Mn compositions or iron phosphate materials, because of expected advantages in power density, safety requirements and cost reduction potentials.
