Growing requirements to flexibility, lead time reduction, customization possibilities have caused a need to establish numerous collaborative partnerships between them. An intelligent systems is required, to share product information, from initial design through manufacturing, future design modifications, and revisions. With the aim of achieving global distributed processes & functions and value chain integration and dynamic collaboration, knowledge management has become of high importance. In BTO (build to-order) production networks as an example of flexible supply networks (FSNet) it is important to derive and process knowledge from various sources including: customer needs, perceptions, and motivations, expertise within and across the production network; best practices, technology intelligence and forecasting, systemic innovation, products in the marketplace, who is buying them and why, what prices they are selling at, what competitors are selling now and what they are planning to sell in the future. The project 'Intelligent Logistics for Innovative Product Technologies' (ILIPT) is devoted to development of new methods and technologies to facilitate the implementation of a new manufacturing paradigm for the European automotive industry. This new paradigm, 'the 5-day car' will approach the building of cars to order in a reduced time scale. The paper represents an approach to BTO production network configuration based on the idea of knowledge logistics (KL) that stands for acquisition, integration, and transfer of the right knowledge from distributed sources to right persons (decision makers) at the right time for the right business purpose. KL with regard to individual customer requirements, available knowledge sources, and current situation analysis in an open information environment addresses problems of intelligent support of customer activities. It focuses on development of methods and tools allowing to turn distributed information into useful knowledge.
