In the present study, we evaluate rectangular CFRP tubes with a rib which are designed and fabricated for the purpose of absorbing impact energy under full-lap collision. A drop weight impact tests are carried out to investigate impact response behaviors and impact energy absorption characteristics of the rectangular CFRP tubes. Stacking sequences of the main and rib parts in the rectangular CFRP tubes are [(0/9O)6/0]s and (O) respectively. A finite element model is also developed by using the nonlinear, explicit dynamic code LS-DYNA to simulate the progressive failure behaviors and absorbed energy of the rectangular CFRP tubes with a rib under impact loading. The experimental results of impact energy and behaviors are compared with those obtained by the FEM. The comparisons of experimental results with FEM ones for the load-displacement curves are favorable. Especially, the maximum load, absorbed energy and final displacement calculated by Model 3 are in good agreement with the average values of the impact test results. And it is proven that the rectangular CFRP tubes with a rib are effective as an impact absorption member under full-lap collision.
