The 240ZJ-series of Diesel engine from Dalian Locomotive and Rolling Stock Works, (DLoco), is one of the most widely used rail traction engines in China and for export, with an annual production of approx. 3 - 400 engines andnearly 6000 engines produced so far by DLoco and about 3000 by their licensees. It is a conventional V-engine design of 50 deg of 240 bore by 275 mm stroke, further characterized by it's welded construction and nodular cast iron crankshaft. Its rating in1973 was 206 HP per cylinder. In 1987 a significantly up-graded 240ZJD version with 275 HP/cyl was introduced, the outcome of a successful development program between DLoco and Ricardo, [ref 1]. The cooperation continued and resulted in a further upgrade to the 240ZJE version with a rating of 312 HP/cyl. in 1989. Although this has proven to be a very successful engine and further strengthened the position of DLoco in the market, DLoco contracted Ricardo to assist with the reduction of exhaust emissions to ensure that the impending emissions legislation for locomotives. This Paper summarizes the development history of the DL240 ZJ engine series and the emissions development programme to achieve UIC II emissions compliance is described. This included performance simulation, combustion system optimisation by means of CFD calculations as well re-design and respecification of key components like the combustion bowl, camshaft and the change to an electronically controlled fuel injection system. These modifications are described in some detail, the various development test steps are explained and the final results are compared with the initial predictions. An outlook is given to the future of the DL240 engine, the challenge of meeting the next emission level, UIC III and the intended strategy to achieve this.
