In the 1980s when exhaust emission reduction for stationary engines were noticed, a concept of simultaneous reduction both of NOx and BSFC was established by simulation analyses and engine tests, then the results of research was presented in the 18th CIMAC Congress in 1989. The issues of exhaust emission reduction have been being wrestled for more than 30 years in Niigata including for stationary engines. Here, the activities for NOx reduction research on diesel engines for about 30 years and the result of examinations to comply with IMO NOx regulation Tier 2 will be presented on a basis of a review of IMO MARPOL 73/78 ANNEX VI. An activity to our environmental problem dated back to the beginning of the 1970s and the precombustion chamber system was also examined at that time. Then, the fundamental and applied technologies such as the combustion improvement with fuel injection timing retard, EGR, water emulsified fuel and water injection have been examined. In the case of water emulsified fuel, the field test for about 3000 hours has been carried out by the stationary power plant in service. Afterwards, the influence of medium and large sized stationary diesel engines on the air pollution was examined from the viewpoint of the environmental preservation in the 1980s. The NOx reduction measures of the engine itself have been oriented by the simulation analyses of the NO emission to comply with the NOx legislation of the land used engine. As a result of having been provided from the examination, NOx can be reduced by the injection timing retard with controlling the deterioration of specific fuel consumption and smoke by maintaining maximum cylinder pressure as the design point by compression ratio and boost pressure increases. As the personal computer is remarkable advanced recently, performance simulation for the multi cylinder engine and the CFD analysis can be carried out on the personal computer now, and the research on the technique for decreasing NOx further without deteriorating other performances is continued. In addition, it was presented that 80 to 90 % reduction can be achieved by using SCR system taking into account ammonia slip in the 20th CIMAC Congress from the field test of training ship which installed the SCR system. Moreover, it was reported that the method of controlling the reducing agent supply was also important to the load change application. The IMO NOx regulation Tier 1 came into effect on May 19, 2005. The above combustion concept is applied for our engines, and the engines are complied with by the combustion adjustment of engine itself. Furthermore, the regulation will become severe in the future. To cope with these circumstances, the examination by the above-mentioned engine performance simulation and the CFD analysis is continued to show the further NOx reduction. Here, it reports on the low emission correspondence in the future that bases the additional technologies such as these analyses and the water emulsified fuel.
