Building activities in Dubai have exploded. When the second Palm Island, known as Jebel Ali, is completed, it will house a population of approximately 250000 people. Palm Island Jumeirah will house 32 luxury hotels and 2000 villas. The basic break water construction was completed in december 2003 and consists of a 12 km long and 200 meters wide protective breakwater construction in front of 17 fronds. The breakwater rises four meters above sea level at low tide. On the outside of the crescent lies a layer created from rocks. The nonwoven geotextile that was used for protection of the crescent was Fibertex F-650M. While Fibertex has both spunmelt and needlepunch tenologies, all of the materials used in the project were needlepunch materials, primarily of polypropylene. When it was decided to build Palm Island Jebel Ali, Fibertex was again contacted for the delivery of geotextiles. Fibertex F-700M was designed specifically for this purpose.
