Maximised safety, reliability, availability and economy are the main targets of the German Railway System (DB AG) for the operation of its rolling stock, specifically of the high-speed trains (ICE), taking into account the high dynamic loads on the components. For non-destructive examination, these aspects call for NDE systems that are able to reliably detect and evaluate eventual defects within the minimum feasible timeframe following a consequent stepwise schedule of inspection and maintenance activities. The system features have been realised as required in the specification of the Deutsche Bahn AG and proven as compliant to these challenging requirements by the operational experience. The main criteria are: Minimised number of probes with at least the same system performance in terms of sensitivity, discrimination and clear evaluation as established by the UFPE 1 system, minimised dimension of probe system and probe-holder system with no need to detach any structural elements in the vicinity of the wheel, no change of probe holder system for inspecting driving or trailing wheels of ICE 3 and ICE T necessary, reproducible and automated time-saving operation, bottom-to-bottom time less than 30 min per wheel set n High availability of the systems to fit into the tight maintenance schedule of the Deutsche Bahn AG for the ICE fleet In total, for more than two years, the Deutsche Bahn AG successfully operates four UFPE 2 systems continuously within the new ICE maintenance programme, two in the Munich workshops and two in Dortmund.
