Using complex tools for generating basic software (like in AUTOSAR), operating systems (e.g. OSEK) or other software parts of embedded systems is a common approach to reduce software complexity. Handling the complexity of configuration of these tools is an unsolved area today. The paper proposes the use of domain-specific generators or project-specific generators that use templates to configure other tools. It describes the development process with the use of a runtime generator (RTE) and the configurator for basic software. The advantages for the project team are: Independence of tool supplier, ease of use, error reduction. It allows to reacting to tool updates or replacements of tools or to integrate other tools in the development process.
