In order to be able to simulate the end-of life performance of a vehicle with an appropriate software tool from the beginning of the vehicle development process it is essential to use data with different data quality from different data bases. According to the European Directives 2000/53/EC on end-of life vehicles and 2005/64/EC on the type-approval of vehicles with regard to their reusability, recyclability and recoverability car manufacturers have to ensure certain recycling and recovery rates for type-approval. Due to an increasing importance of virtual vehicle development a simulation tool using required data and data bases regarding components, materials and masses of a defined reference vehicle is essential for calculating and monitoring recycling and recovery rates during vehicle engineering process. In addition to the calculation of recycling and recovery rates according to ISO standard 22628:2002 considering available proven recycling technologies, all necessary documentation for type-approval is generated by the simulation tool. Assessments and improvements regarding recycling and design for recycling focus only on end-of life, but neglect all other life cycle stages of a produkt. Life cycle assessment (LCA) considers the complete life cycle of a product and seems to be a promising tool of design for environment in order to identify environmental improvement potentials. LCA activities have increased in the last years due to product-related environmental problems, emerging green markets and public discussions on environmental issues in car sector. But the product automobile with its huge number of components and variety of materials is very complex. A full LCA according to ISO standard 14040 is quite a time consuming and expensive task. A streamlined LCA with intelligent simplifications regarding life cycle stages, impact categories and system inputs and outputs is indispensable.
