A reliable sensing technology is essential in implementing various automotive safety systems which can reduce traffic accidents. Therefore, a sensor fusion system will be proposed that can detect pedestrians using electrically scanned millimeter wave radar and a stereo vision technique. The radar gaze control utilizes the results of the stereo camera and can improve the performance of pedestrian detection. The radar signal gives a measure of the reliability with which the presence or absence of a pedestrian is detected. In addition, the results of the two sensors are integrated using the reliability. Consequently the system can simultaneously reduce missed and false detections. Experiments confirm that the system can improve the detection rates of pedestrians by up to a factor of four with respect to conventional radar, whilst reducing the false detection caused by stereo vision by approximately 30%.
