Software (SW) updates and delivery of digital content take place over the whole life cycle of a vehicle. The intellectual property contained in SW updates and digital content needs to be protected in order to prevent misuse by a variety of potential adversaries. However, electronic control units in current vehicles provide low resistance to attacks of skilled adversaries, and although there is awareness of the need for SW-based protection, the obvious need for secure hardware (HW) is often neglected. The authors argue that assuming a vehicle's complete electronic HW to be secure is too optimistic and implies the need for expensive tamper-resistant HW. In this paper, enhanced security architecture will be presented that allows to use inexpensive HW components and channels, such as off-the-shelf memory components, even if they are under total control of an adversary. To do so, we enhance a standard architecture with a cryptographic module and a very small amount of secure memory, which allows to significantly reduce the trust assumptions on the major memory components.
