Ultrasonic techniques have proven very successful for in-line inspection of crack-like defects in liquid pipelines. As the hoop stress is the main stress component in a pipe under normal operating conditions, cracks normally grow into axial direction. Therefore, the ILI-tools available today for crack detection are designed to detect axial cracks. In certain cases, however, such as poor quality of girth welds or the occurrence of large bending stresses ( in offshore risers) circumferential cracks may be generated which can eventually lead to pipeline failures. In order to enable the reliable detection of such defects an ultrasonic ILI tool has been set-up based on an existing tool for axial crack detection. After having validated the new tool by extensive loop tests first inspection runs in operating pipelines were performed. Results show that the new tool meets the requirements for reliable inspection of transverse cracks.
