The torsional mode T(0,1) of a guided wave is generated in order to detect discontinuities in pipelines. However, many pipes of interest are supported with clamps to satisfy the needs of the manufacturing processes in refineries and petrochemical sites. The effect on guided wave propagation of the clamp support mounted on the pipe is investigated by the experimental method. The amplitude of the reflected signals from the clamp support and the flange feature on the pipe are measured under various torque settings for calculating the attenuation. The reflected signals of the artificial discontinuities are also measured for evaluating the attenuation of the guided waves when they propagate through the clamp support. The results show that the attenuation of the clamp support with a rubber gasket is heavier than in the case of a clamp support without a rubber gasket, and the higher the torque setting, the higher the amplitude of the reflected signal for the guided wave propagation. Additionally, the resonance effect on the camp support with a rubber gasket is observed as the torque setting onto the pipe at 2.26 Nm. For the artificial discontinuity test, there is no attenuation between the case of a clamp support without a rubber gasket and one with a rubber gasket when the guided wave propagates through the camp support. In addition, the effect of frequency excitation is demonstrated in this paper. It is due to the fact that the higher the amplitude of a reflected signal, the lower the frequency excitation.
