In the present conventional tyre technology, the improvement of one characteristic is not difficult. However, the improvement of one characteristic means that the quality of another characteristic has to be sacrified. The history and the application of the optimisation technique to the tyre design are reviewed. A new tyre design procedure, which is capable of determining the optimum tyre contour, optimum compound characteristics in each tyre material, optimum tyre construction and optimum pitch sequence, has been applied to the actual tyre design. This technology is developed by combining the finite element method or analytical method with an optimisation technique, such as mathematical programming or genetic algorithm, and is applied not only to the shape optimisation, such as tyre crown shape, but also to the topological optimisation, such as composite construction. The new design procedure is verified to improve the manoeuvrability, rolling resistance, durability, tyre noise and other tyre performances through indoor drum tests and field tests, if the appropriate design variable, the constraints and the objective function are selected. The approach of the optimised design looks very smart, but one should not forget that the know-how and the trial and error are necessary in the optimised process. The selection of the appropriate design variable requires the knowledge of the product and the mechanism how to improve the performance for the optimisation. The selection of the parameters for the optimiser requires a kind of optimisation procedure. However, if the procedure of the design optimisation is completed, the development leading time will become shorter and the development cost can be reduced.
