A finite element radial-ply passenger car P205/70R14 tyre model was developed and numerically ran on the road with-a-cleat to examine the tyre transient response characteristics. The tyre vertical reaction force was recorded when the tyre encountered the cleat, and then the FFT algorithm was applied to extract the information from the frequency domain. The simulation results showed that this tyre has a clear transmissibility peak at 84 Hz. Five important tyre model parameters were investigated to validate the reliability and accuracy of the simulation algorithm. Conclusions of this research can be summarised as follows: A detailed FEA model of a general passenger car radial-ply tyre was built. The virtual tyre/road/cleat testing system was established thoroughly. The tyre vertical free vibration mode transmissibility at 84 Hz was detected successfully. The simulation results showed excellent agreement with more than ten previous analytical, computational and experimental studies. Five important simulation-strategy and tyre-model parametes used in this research were tested, verified, and shown to be in excellent agreement with the results from previous empirical data, computational and theoretical/analytical derivations of other investigators. The next step is to extend this transmissibility concept and approach to two-dimension and three-dimension cases; and to introduce uncertainty into the models: the uncertainty from the loading, the tyre inflation pressure, the material properties, etc.
