Park-Distance Control Systems are common in today's cars. These systems use ultrasonic sensors and determine position of obstacles by using multilateration techniques. The advantages and disadvantages of these systems are well known. In this paper, results of a research study regarding automatic parking, are presented. For higher reliability constraints and higher requirements (e. g. regarding weather or driving speed), this sensor system is radar based. The study compares sensor results from UWB and narrowband operation modes, and performance characteristics of an ISM band usage compliant mode capable of immediate radio regulation approval are presented. The system operates by measurement of free space within possible parking slots. A vehicle drives along parking slots, scanning the range to the next objects sideways. Thus, the contour is extracted and the size of the parking slot can be determined. The driver will be informed upon suitability of the slot for parking and manoeuvring. The parking procedure itself will be initiated relative to the actual vehicle position. Practical results from a research vehicle for parking slot recognition equipped with UWB and narrowband radar sensors are presented. The experiences are discussed and compared with commonly employed solutions. Finally, aspects of practical integration in series cars are discussed.
