Developments and systems are presented for measurement and prognosis of friction between wheel and road from the mechatronics point of view. It is shown, that especially the knowledge of the actual friction coefficient can contribute to optimize assistance systems like ABS (Anti-Block Systems), ESP (Electronic Stability Program), ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) etc. Three main parts are dealt with: 1. Some basics on vehicle dynamics including friction modelling, 2. Design of a mobile platform as an autonomous friction measurement device and 3. Development of a system for online prediction of friction in cars.
