Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and active safety components avoid hazards in critical driving situations. Different sensor technologies and system setups have been discussed during the past years and are getting launched on the market. Today the market penetration of active safety systems in the area of vehicle dynamics is already very high in Europe and expected to increase rapidly in North America. Today's available sensing information can be used to significantly improve occupant protection in rollover situations. Efficient algorithms in combination with mathematical vehicle models significantly cut down rollover detection times in case of soil trip events to a minimum and consider the spontaneous reaction of the driver for example in the critical embankment situations. A first step of merging active and passive safety for advanced rollover detection can be achieved without additional cost of the sensing system. As described above, driving dynamics information can be used in at least three different ways to improve the performance of Airbag Control Units in rollover situations. The possible usage ranges from a simple sensor sharing to driving dynamics based deploy decisions. The presented solutions range from improved performance in embankment crashes via absolute angle detection to a faster soil trip detection mechanism. In addition, also the side airbag deploy algorithms may benefit from lateral velocity information.
