Toyota has developed its own 35 MPa and 70 MPa high-pressure hydrogen tanks for fuel cell vehicles, and obtained certification from the High Pressure Gas Safety Institute of Japan (KHK) for both tanks. The newly developed high-pressure hydrogen tanks have been made lighter and stronger. This has been accomplished by using a unique sealing structure to improve hydrogen gas sealing reliability, a polyamide plastic liner with high strength and excellent hydrogen permeation prevention properties to stop hydrogen leakage, and an all-composite tank (V4) with carbon fiber coiled around the outer surface of the plastic liner. This article describes the characteristics of the structure and production of high-pressure hydrogen tanks developed by Toyota. 35 MPa and 70 MPa high-pressure hydrogen tanks with excellent reliability and hydrogen storage efficiency have been developed in-house. These tanks utilize a new boss structure and a polyamide resin for the plastic liner, and feature an optimized CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) layer. The tanks have obtained certification from the High Pressure Gas Safety Institute of Japan in accordance with the Interpretation of Technical Standard for Containers of Compressed Natural Gas Vehicle Fuel Devices contained in Safety Regulations for Containers, REIJIKIJUN BETTEN 9. The 35 MPa tank also conforms to the Technical Standard for Containers of Compressed Hydrogen Vehicle Fuel Devices (JARI S 001) that has been newly established by the Institute as a safety standard for high-pressure hydrogen. As a result, the approved service period has been extended from three to fifteen years. This in-house high-pressure hydrogen tank development has been performed in association with vehicle-related studies. This has enabled the development of a high-pressure hydrogen tank system with excellent cost performance and hydrogen storage efficiency, thereby contributing to further advances in the development of fuel cell vehicles.
