This paper describes the test methods and results used to determine the acceptability of specific COTS transceivers for use in a 1 Gigabit/second military avionics application. Sample transceivers from two suppliers were characterized and subjected to environmental testing. Characterization parameters, tested between -40 deg C and +115 deg C, were transmitter average optical output power, extinction ratio, peak to peak optical power, jitter, eye diagrams and receiver sensitivity. Environmental testing consisted of vibration, mechanical shock, temperature cycling, cold storage, and 85/85 humidity/temperature testing. The results of this testing was then compared to the requirements of the application.
