Health monitoring of the main engine in a ship is very important to ensure the vessel safety and reduce the shipping cost. The condition monitoring of marine diesel engine by using vibration signals is investigated in this paper. The properties of engine surface vibrations under different working conditions are discussed, the characteristics of vibration exciting sources and the leading features of piston impacts are described, and some criteria suitable for marine diesel engine condition monitoring and fault diagnosis are proposed. The analytic and experimental results show that the principal exciting source of cylinder block surface vibration is piston impact. The changes of vibration parameters of cylinder block can be used to detect the conditions of the components inside the cylinders. The relationships between the character parameters of surface vibration and the working conditions of cylinder liner, crankpin and main bearings are presented. Experimental investigations are carried out on a medium speed four-stroke turbo-charged main diesel engine while the ship is in operation. The results show that it is feasible and effective to diagnose the conditions of the components inside the cylinders of diesel engine from the surface vibration signals. It is feasible and effective to diagnose the conditions of the components inside the cylinders of diesel engine from the engine surface vibration signals. The cylinder block surface vibration signals can be used to detect the working conditions of the piston and cylinder liner; the main bearing pedestal vibration signals can be used to monitor the working conditions of the crankpin and main bearings. The ratio of maximum vibration acceleration RA, the maximum value of PSD (Power Spectral Density), and the ratio of power RP can be used as the character parameters in marine diesel engine vibration monitoring.
