Wheel force transducers are widely used in the car and commercial vehicle industry to determine forces and moments of vehicles in operation, relevant for multiple tasks within the development process of the manufacturers. The data are used to evaluate the driving condition, the functionability of given suspensions ore to evaluated the vehicles durability. In the rail industry technologies as a mixture of axle and wheel strain gage applications with many insufficiencies are known. On trams even such installations are often not applicable to geometrical restrictions and the design. With the development of the new rail measuring wheel a multi-axial sensor is presented, which is based on many years of experience in road vehicle wheel force transducers. It allows the determination of the vertical, lateral and longitudinal. This instrumentation in one location on the wheel allows measurements also of high frequency loads, since no dynamic effects must be considered additionally. It additionally provides the information about the actual contact point of the wheel tire on the rail, since all six load components are measured highly accurate. It can be used for the derivation of meaning full design data for test programmes and design of wheels, axles and bogies. This paper presents the technology on the example of a tram wheel, which has been set up and tested for a measuring campaign in the tram network in Frankfurt in Mai 2006. Like in the road vehicle industries it is expected hat this wheel force transducer technology will be introduce to other rail vehicles in the regional and high-speed rail traffic.
