It is the aim of the present paper to investigate the use of elevated temperatures as a process parameter in forming operations of magnesium and aluminium alloys to produce of large, complex sheet metal components. The results of the investigations carried out show that it is possible, using temperature supported hydroforming processes, to combine the potential of media-based forming with that of temperature supported processes. During the study, it was established, firstly, that it is completely impossible to produce complex magnesium components without using a temperature supported process. Only as a result of additional glide planes being made available due to the effect of temperature are the conditions created under which the forming process can be carried out. Consequently, complex components can be produced from magnesium. Secondly, it became apparent that strategic use of temperature can have a positive effect on the forming behavior of aluminum materials. This is reflected in a clear shift in forming limits in comparison with forming operations carried out at room temperature. An important prerequisite for the performance of forming operations of this kind is the creation of the appropriate conditions in terms of the process technology, focusing especially on the design of the tools and the machine and equipment. This includes the strategy for generating and delivering the temperatures required, the measures for strategic cooling of tool segments, the design and dimensions of the forming tool (including any insulation required) and the respective design of the forming and heating devices.
