An ARLB (aqueous rechargeable lithium battery) was developed with LiCoO2 as the positive electrode, LiV3O8 as the negative electrode, and saturated LiNO3 solution as the electrolyte. The charge and discharge curves were investigated by means of cyclic voltammetry. Li ions were shown to deintercalate from LiCoO2 and intercalate into LiV3O8 during the charge process, and during the discharge process Li ions deintercalated from LiV3O8 and intercalated into LiCoO2. The novel ARBL is a promising alternative regarding inexpensive materials, ease of assembly, environmental competitiveness and safety of operation. Both electrodes were shown to be stable in saturated aqueous LiNO3 solution The cycling performance of the ARLB can be further optimized, however, the ARLB shows promise as power source for safe EVs (electric vehicles). Further studies are underway to examine the changes on the electrodes and the redox kinetics during the charge and discharge processes.
